Mobile TV: Digita (TDF Group) takes a major step forward in European DVB-H

Bonn, 15 October 2009

Since October 8, customers of the Finnish mobile phone operator DNA are able to watch television on their mobile phones over a DVB-H mobile television network. Digita, the Finnish subsidiary of TDF, is managing this new digital terrestrial broadcast network dedicated to mobile devices.

As a first step, television services will be accessible free of charge for any Finnish mobile subscriber; after that, broadcast television will be encrypted and reserved for the 2.5 million DNA customers who have mobile phones compatible with DVB-H technology (such as for example the Nokia N77 and N96 models, as well as on N73, N79, N85, N97, E75 phones and Nokia 5800 XpressMusic) will be able to subscribe to the service.

The service marketed by DNA includes the main public and private Finnish TV and radio channels.

The quality of the picture and reliability of the service broadcast on this mobile TV network meets the expectations of Finnish mobile viewers. "It augurs well for the launch of a commercial service. When television services are offered over a broadcast network, the capacity of the 3G network remains fully available for other mobile data applications", affirms a DNA executive.

Optimised for personal use and mobile reception, the network already covers Helsinki and adjacent towns, as well as the main conurbations in Finland. In the country's major commercial centres, particular attention has been paid to mobile television network coverage indoors.

TDF is pleased with this agreement between DNA and Digita, which is an indication of good progress in the development of mobile television and DVB-H in Europe. MEDIA BROADCAST, part of the TDF Group, launched mobile TV using DVB-H in Austria, during Euro 2008.
