IBC 2011: MEDIA BROADCAST presents innovative applications for hybrid TV

MEDIA BROADCAST, Europe’s leading full-service provider in the media and broadcast industry, is about to add an innovative boost to hybrid broadcast broadband.

Bonn, Amsterdam 8. September 2011 – MEDIA BROADCAST presents innovative applications for hybrid TV

Signalling via barker channel to include online offers in EPG programmeguides

Flexible range of applications with all digital broadcasting systems

Modular content delivery services support both live and on-demand broadcastsof IP-based contents

Against the backdrop of the IBC 2011 exhibition in Amsterdam, MEDIA BROADCAST is eager to present its new technology for web-based on-demand services. A barker channel is used to transmit additional Service Information (SI) data which links to online portals or live streams hosted by various content providers. This presents a whole new programme line-up in EPG configurations – not just for digital hybrid receivers, but for linear TV too. Making it all possible is new access technology incorporating the remote controls of both systems. It promises a fusion of linear and web-based contents into an entirely new way of experiencing television without any media conversion – think of it as channel surfing between broadcast and broadband contents.
Barker channels serve to benefit online providers in the form of direct EPG listing as well as consumers in the form of direct access to services.
This new technology by MEDIA BROADCAST supports both hybrid TV and standard HbbTV with its transmission range covering all digital broadcast systems such as satellite, cable and terrestrial transmission. It is the open and non-discriminatory system solution for all content providers seeking to develop new hybrid strategies or to offer new web services. It paves the way for MEDIA BROADCAST to create innovative market opportunities for new customer segments.

A full-service provider in the media and broadcast industry, MEDIA BROADCAST combines comprehensive service with its innovative solutions for the rapidly growing sector of IP-based distribution systems. Its cutting-edge, modular Content Distribution Services solution, for example, supports 24/7 live streaming as well as on-demand services. It’s merely one of the manifold solutions developed by MEDIA BROADCAST to cover virtually all processes that constitute the value chain, including signal processing, encoding, encryption, the set-up and operation of content management systems and playlists, as well as the distribution of IP content among multimedia devices to name just a few. Intrinsic to all these developments is the scalable, high-performance content distribution network the company can rely on when it comes to excellent transmission quality – be it hybrid TV reality or HD contents.

MEDIA BROADCAST is selected by Media Development Authority of Singapore as technical consultant for the design of digital terrestrial broadcasting trial network based on the DVB-T2 standard

Bonn, Singapore – MEDIA BROADCAST, a company of the TDF Group and Europe´s leading service provider to the broadcast and media industry, has been selected by the Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA) to conduct a DVB-T2 technical trial in the city state.

DVB-T2 trial network will be launched in summer 2011
This technical trial sets the groundwork to enable free-to-air digital terrestrial TV reception using the trendsetting DVB-T2 standard. The consultancy study in Singapore is a significant part of MEDIA BROADCAST’s strategy to develop relevant markets in Southeast Asia and to leverage its comprehensive DVB-T2 expertise.
MEDIA BROADCAST will provide technical consultancy to design and manage the technical trial for deriving the suitable T2 transmission modes and technical parameters. From the beginning of August 2011, MEDIA BROADCAST will run a comprehensive trial together with local broadcasters, analyzing the quality of in-house, outdoor and mobile reception to define a best-fit specification of the planned T2 network design.
“MEDIA BROADCAST is a proven expert and leader of DVB-T2 broadcasting technology ready to market. We are glad and proud to support the development of the new Singapore digital terrestrial broadcasting network – currently the most ambitious DVB-T2-network worldwide. After having supported ABU’s (Asian Broadcasting Union) DVB-T2 demonstration in Kuala Lumpur/Malaysia in spring we are happy to extend our footprint in the region”, MEDIA BROADCAST CEO Bernd Kraus stated. “The cooperation with MDA and partners is a true cornerstone project of our market development in the greater ASEAN region. Based on our longstanding experience, proven excellence in DVB-T2 and German engineering expertise, we will support this network trial to set up a strong basis for a powerful start into the age of digital TV in Singapore.”
Notification: In cooperation with DVB, MEDIA BROADCAST will showcase a DVB-T2 signal using Multiple PLP technology during the upcoming Broadcast Asia 2011 from June 21-24 in Singapore (DVB booth 4F2-06)

MEDIA BROADCAST provides transmission services using Next Generation Network and SNG for the live HDTV broadcast of the Women’s Football World Cup 2011

Bonn – MEDIA BROADCAST, Europe‘s leading full service provider for the broadcast and media industries, is supporting the live HDTV transmission of the Women’s Football World Cup 2011 (26 June to 17 July 2011) using its comprehensive broadcast services. As a service provider for Host Broadcast...

This permits the IP-supported transmission in real time of all of the live HD video signals from all of the venues. Besides this, the full service provider is taking over the uplink of the World Feed from the IBCC.

Utilisation of Next Generation Network (NGN) for IP-based signal transmission and linking of the stadiums with the IBCC

Mobile production, broadcast and backup services using SNG fleet

Drawing on the successful broadcast of the 2006 and 2010 Football World Cups

With these and further services, MEDIA BROADCAST provides an essential technical basis for supplying live pictures of the tournament in the best possible HDTV quality to broadcasting organisations reporting the event in Germany and throughout the world.
MEDIA BROADCAST’S innovative NGN is the technical backbone of its transmission services. It links the venues in Augsburg, Berlin, Bochum, Dresden, Leverkusen, Mönchengladbach, Sinsheim and Wolfsburg with the central IBCC in Frankfurt/Main, the production facility of the World Feed used worldwide. For this reason, the NGN forms a crucial link in the whole chain of live signal transmission. The live transmission of pre-produced HDTV signals occurs at a data rate ranging from 350 Mbit/s to 1,485 Gbit/s per signal path. Backup is provided by means of HDTV satellite signals connected in parallel between all the venues and the IBCC.
Along with HBS, MEDIA BROADCAST provides further national and international broadcasting organisations with individual broadcasting and production services via SNG and NGN.
With the delivery of the Women’s Football World Cup 2011 MEDIA BROADCAST is drawing on its previous successful live HDTV transmission services, including the previous World Cups in Germany and South Africa. For the event in South Africa, the full service provider successfully utilised the IP transmission platform which it had developed to link the venues spread across the whole country with the IBC in Johannesburg. MEDIA BROADCAST delivered the international events with 100 percent signal accessibility and through its innovative transmission platforms made an essential contribution to the smooth-running worldwide TV transmission of the major sporting events.
“We are delighted that MEDIA BROADCAST has once again been selected as the technical service provider for the TV broadcast of a Football World Cup“, commented Bernd Kraus, CEO of MEDIA BROADCAST. “Using our technical know-how and our experience in the broadcast management of major international media events we will again make every possible effort to broadcast this World Cup smoothly and in the best possible HDTV quality live to the millions of fans right across the world“.
“Optimum reliability in the supply, service and operation of our platform forms the basis for uninterrupted transmission, as does maximum backup and the best technical components on all levels of the process chain“, added Marcus Busch, Head of the Business Unit Networks at MEDIA BROADCAST.
NGN background information
MEDIA BROADCAST‘S innovative, highly scalable Next Generation Network (NGN) permits the IP-based transmission of data-intensive video and audio content as well as data and voice applications. In doing so, it offers TV broadcasters, production companies and organisers of major international events the best conditions for networking. The support provided caters for DVB-Distribution, Event Broadcast Services, Dial-up and Switched connections and VPN. Newly developed customer terminals offer users defined switching options so they can set up their own point-to-point links, thereby ensuring maximum flexibility in the production environment. MEDIA BROADCAST‘S NGN supports all classic transmission formats, from AES/EBU right through to the uncompressed 1,485 Gbit HDTV signal, as well as numerous new, open IP-based transmission paths (10/100/1000 Ethernet).
SNG background information
MEDIA BROADCAST‘S SNG (Satellite News Gathering) fleet is completely tailored towards live production in HDTV. Vision mixers, editing units, VTR and up to four HD cameras on board provide flexible possibilities for mobile TV applications, e.g. reports, news coverage, major media events. Connectivity in live applications is achieved by means of satellite uplink and connection possibilities to MEDIA BROADCAST‘S IP-based NGN.
