Be it a single-screen cinema or a 20-screen multiplex: with digital cinema, the blockbusters from Hollywood and other major studios are no longer sent out to cinemas on massive reels of 35 mm colour celluloid, but in the form of data packets sent via broadband connection, satellite transmission or hard drive shipments.

Digital Cinema describes the whole process, from the production of a film through to its cinema screening using digital technology. The basis for this is defined by the DCI specifications “DCI Digital Cinema System Spec V1.2”.

So what exactly does this mean for the future of cinema in the 21st century? There are five answers to this question. Digital Cinema enables:

• the fast, uncomplicated and cost-efficient delivery of digital films as DCPs (Digital Cinema Packages) and of advertisements and trailers via new distribution platforms (satellite, Internet, physical media)

• wider availability of films, better image quality and actuality of advertisements and trailers
• fast adaptation of show sequences (advertisements, trailers, main feature) to suit changing factors, such as target groups, time of day or day of the week
• additional presentations of alternative contents, for example from a Blu-Ray disc or the live broadcast (“public viewing”) of a sports, music, opera or theatre event as well as film premieres.
